[00:00:38] They fall into that category of clowns, witches, and axe-wielding maniacs,

[00:00:43] things that you can put on a movie poster and draw a horror-loving audience anywhere in the world.

[00:00:49] What is it about these objects meant to bring joy and happiness that instead conjures fear and dread?

[00:00:56] And how have scary storytellers used them throughout the years to rattle our sense of safety around what should be a beloved children's toy?

[00:03:19] So, Allie, you first came to our attention through another podcast we love here at Scared

[00:03:23] all the time that we were just talking about before we jumped on called Talking Scared,

[00:03:28] which is a show where Neil McRober interviews horror authors about where their stories come from

[00:03:33] and what scares them.

[00:03:34] We found his show when scouring Google to make sure there weren't any other podcasts

[00:03:40] called Scared all the time.

[00:03:41] And our first time hearing Allie on there was fantastic.

[00:03:46] She was part of a three-hour deep dive on It, the book It, that went kind of, I guess,

[00:03:52] would you say it went viral in the horror writing community, Allie?

[00:03:55] I mean, I don't know.

[00:03:57] I don't know.

[00:03:58] I mean, it did get King's attention.

[00:04:01] Yes.

[00:04:02] You know, so that happened.

[00:04:04] And not in the form of a cease and desist letter, which is nice.

[00:04:08] And it got me a follow from him.

[00:04:11] And he's also very excited to read this new book of mine.

[00:04:34] also watches a lot of horror movies and will get in contact with directors and stuff.

[00:04:38] But I, I mean, obviously, we're all King lovers on this show.

[00:04:40] But I just, I think it's so great that he's a guy who has not gotten any less.

[00:04:46] In fact, it seems like he's maybe gotten more or become a bigger, I don't want to say a

[00:04:51] bigger fan, but like, he's not a guy who walled himself off in a tower and was like, I'm Stephen

[00:04:55] King and the rest of you can worship at my feet.

[00:04:58] No, not at all.

[00:04:59] Like, he's just like, I love this.

[00:05:14] Well, I guess before we dive into talking about dolls, I don't know how much you want to

[00:05:19] talk about the book or what you can say about the book, but do you want to tell the audience

[00:05:22] or us anything about what Broken Dolls is about?

[00:05:26] Sure.

[00:05:27] Sure.

[00:05:27] So it's a middle grade book and that for people unfamiliar with that term means it's for eight

[00:05:31] to 12 year olds.

[00:05:32] Nice.

[00:05:33] And it's a story of a girl named Kay whose grandfather passes away and she has a lot of

[00:05:38] trouble dealing with that.

[00:05:40] She has a little sister, Holly, and they go upstate for the summer to stay at their uncle's

[00:05:44] place.

[00:05:45] And while they're there, they go to a fair and Holly wins a doll.

[00:05:49] And that doll is alive and basically is trying to turn Holly into a doll by convincing her

[00:05:55] that if she's a doll, she'll never die and she'll never have to worry about that.

[00:05:59] And so Kay's job is to convince Holly that even though death is sad and scary, it's what

[00:06:06] makes living worth it because it doesn't last forever.

[00:06:08] If it lasted forever, it wouldn't matter.

[00:06:10] That's true.

[00:06:10] We were just talking about that in a previous episode about like in sudden death, like would

[00:06:14] you rather live forever?

[00:06:16] And it just becomes a bummer.

[00:06:17] Yeah, it's a bummer.

[00:06:18] It's a giant bummer.

[00:06:19] Yeah, so this is, listener, we are learning this in real time, but this makes Allie a double

[00:06:25] perfect guest for the show because I think not only do we talk about it in sudden death,

[00:06:29] but I think that's kind of, it's kind of what every episode of our show is about in

[00:06:34] a way, which is like, yes, there's all these scary, horrible things out there in the world

[00:06:38] that could hurt you or kill you.

[00:06:39] But life is worth living around them anyway and experiencing all the good and letting the

[00:06:44] bad put the good into context.

[00:07:23] Ed and I have a pretty good radar for when we hit a topic and we go, eh, I think we can

[00:07:29] But I mean, I can't speak for Ed.

[00:07:32] I love, admittedly, I read less middle school horror these days because I'm aged out a little

[00:07:38] bit.

[00:07:39] But I do love horror for kids and I dip my toe into it every once in a while because there's

[00:07:44] something about, I've mentioned it on the show before, but I was scared of everything

[00:07:48] growing up.

[00:07:49] And so that feeling of like discovering goosebumps and are you afraid of the dark and like middle

[00:07:55] grade horror stuff, it weirdly like taps back into that initial wave of fear that

[00:08:01] I felt becoming a horror fan.

[00:08:03] So, you know, in a way, sometimes reading middle grade books, like it conjures up feelings like

[00:08:09] that, that even like adult horror doesn't or it does it in a different way because it puts

[00:08:14] me back in the feeling of being a kid and being scared as a kid.

[00:08:18] Yeah.

[00:08:18] Yeah.

[00:08:19] And I think it's good that there's so much of it now because like when I was growing up,

[00:08:23] there wasn't a lot because I'm a little too old for goosebumps.

[00:08:27] So I didn't read that growing up.

[00:08:28] I basically went from like reading fantasy books to sneaking the king off of my older sister's

[00:08:34] shelf and reading that at way too young of an age.

[00:08:37] Yeah.

[00:08:38] I made sure my mom didn't catch me because I was scared.

[00:08:40] I also was scared of everything.

[00:08:42] Yeah.

[00:08:42] Yeah.

[00:08:42] Yeah.

[00:08:42] Well, I think that's a great pivot into a place to start the episode, which is Ed and I usually

[00:08:48] like to start talking about kind of like our personal experiences with the topic.

[00:08:52] So Allie, what brought you to the topic of scary dolls for this book?

[00:08:58] Like, was that a childhood fear?

[00:09:00] Is it a current fear?

[00:09:01] Do you have a Cabbage Patch Kid that won't die?

[00:09:05] You know, I think it is mostly stemmed from a lifelong love of Chucky and always wanting

[00:09:14] to write something in that style where dolls are dangerous.

[00:09:18] And I just like the idea of it, you know, in general.

[00:09:20] And I have lots of like creepy dolls.

[00:09:22] So I share, I'm in my writing room and I share this room with my husband and sitting on the

[00:09:27] chair, I'm going to show you this sitting on the chair next to me is my own little Annabelle.

[00:09:32] Nope.

[00:09:32] Don't need that in our lives.

[00:09:34] And I swear every time he's in here, he turns her around.

[00:09:37] He's like, I can't, I can't look at her.

[00:09:38] I can't do it.

[00:09:39] Oh my God.

[00:09:40] So yeah, I've just, I've always found them like creepy and interesting.

[00:09:43] And, you know, I just felt like it fit, you know, I knew I wanted to write about

[00:09:47] grief and I felt like this was, it just felt like a good horror fit to talk about the fact

[00:09:54] that yes, death is scary, but it's going to happen.

[00:09:57] And it's good that it happens because that's what makes life meaningful.

[00:10:00] Yeah.

[00:10:01] And that's a great, I mean, so much good horror is finding that intersection of the theme

[00:10:06] and the horror that represents it.

[00:10:08] And I feel like that's a really interesting, it's one that I haven't heard before.

[00:10:13] The idea of turning into a doll is a way of avoiding a fear of death.

[00:10:16] So that's, that's really cool.

[00:10:18] Ed, what about you?

[00:10:20] Have you, did you have scary dolls?

[00:10:22] Did your brothers beat you with Ken dolls when you were a kid or anything?

[00:10:25] No, I wasn't beaten by Ken dolls or whatever you just said by my brothers.

[00:10:30] But there is, you know, it's interesting.

[00:10:32] I'm a little triggered from Allie holding up her Annabelle because I am, it's fine.

[00:10:38] In case you don't know, I am from a small town called Monroe, Connecticut.

[00:10:42] Which is the home of the Warrens.

[00:10:44] And so for me, they were just people I'd see at the grocery store and stuff.

[00:10:48] But to other people, they're just paranormal investigators.

[00:10:51] And so on Halloween, they would come to like local middle schools and high schools and they

[00:10:55] would do these like evenings with the Warrens.

[00:10:58] And so you would get a ticket and like you'd go and they would bring like demonic recordings

[00:11:03] and stuff.

[00:11:03] But like one year they brought Annabelle to Shelton High School.

[00:11:08] And that was...

[00:11:08] You're not supposed to take her out of the box.

[00:11:09] They brought the box.

[00:11:11] They brought the box.

[00:11:12] Brought the box.

[00:11:13] Perfect.

[00:11:14] Yeah.

[00:11:14] So it was in a case of some kind.

[00:11:16] And I was pretty young.

[00:11:16] So I remember it not being...

[00:11:18] It wasn't loose.

[00:11:20] You know what I mean?

[00:11:21] And but yeah, so I'm from the literal town where that thing resides.

[00:11:27] Wow.

[00:11:27] And so, you know, that's kind of my earliest, I guess.

[00:11:31] You know, that and Poltergeist.

[00:11:33] And like weird aunts that had little figurines.

[00:11:38] Yeah.

[00:11:38] I think probably in that same level of like dolls and like a lot of my family are antiquers.

[00:11:44] And there's just so many things that come home from antique stores that should have stayed.

[00:11:49] Yes.

[00:11:50] When I was a kid, there were two dolls that really fucked me up.

[00:11:54] One was this blonde doll.

[00:11:57] It was probably about, I don't know, like two feet tall, maybe a foot and a half.

[00:12:01] It was like a bigger doll.

[00:12:03] It was from this brand called My Little Buddy, which I think is the brand that they used to

[00:12:09] kind of like riff Chucky off of.

[00:12:11] Yep.

[00:12:12] Was the My Little Buddy.

[00:12:13] But my mom or whoever got this thing for me didn't know that, I don't think.

[00:12:19] But they always used to call it Chucky because it looked like a blonde Chucky, basically.

[00:12:23] And I've had more nightmares about that doll than anything in my life.

[00:12:29] I never had any love for it.

[00:12:30] And I mean, I don't know, maybe my hatred for it corrupted it or something and made it even worse.

[00:12:36] But it would always just sit around the house and be creepy.

[00:12:39] And it always kind of freaked me out.

[00:12:41] The other doll was a more old school doll that my grandmother had.

[00:12:47] So it was like a very traditional, like a doll with curly brown hair in a pink dress

[00:12:53] that my grandmother had gotten for my mom and her sister when they were kids.

[00:12:58] But it always my cousins, my sisters and I always scared us.

[00:13:02] And we always just called it demon doll.

[00:13:04] Sure.

[00:13:07] And so, yeah, there's a long running joke in my family of like, when we were young,

[00:13:12] my grandmother didn't try to scare us with it because she wasn't a monster.

[00:13:15] But once we were old enough, my grandmother, shout out Grossi, would take the doll out of the room

[00:13:21] and hide it other places in the house.

[00:13:23] And my aunt especially would, demon dolls made appearances in Christmas presents on Zooms.

[00:13:31] Demon doll gets like passed around.

[00:13:33] So I don't even know where she is right now.

[00:13:36] Hopefully not.

[00:13:37] Behind you?

[00:13:37] Yeah, right?

[00:13:38] It would be so crazy if it just floated into frame.

[00:13:40] But yeah, demon doll, demon doll was, I don't even know.

[00:13:43] I mean, I guess I was born in 86 and Child's Play, the first one came out in like 87, I think.

[00:13:49] So my awareness of Chucky probably started pretty young, but I think I was maybe just afraid of

[00:13:55] demon doll before I knew about Chucky.

[00:13:58] Well, the term for the fear of dolls that we all share is the really unfortunate sounding

[00:14:04] pediophobia, which is a branch of the larger phobia, automatonophobia, or the fear of humanoid

[00:14:12] figures.

[00:14:13] So sort of like squares and rectangles, all pediophobes are automatonophobes,

[00:14:18] but not all automatonophobes are pediophobes.

[00:14:22] And watch who you're calling a pediophobe, buddy.

[00:14:25] Yeah.

[00:14:25] I got to see how the, I don't know, Spotify AI generated transcript does with that.

[00:14:31] Yeah.

[00:14:32] It gets repeated a lot.

[00:14:34] So people who are automatonophobes can suffer from a fear of like mannequins or the Hall

[00:14:41] of Presidents at Disney, which are all very worthwhile fears, but not as specific as dolls.

[00:14:46] At their core, these fears are rooted in what a Japanese robotics engineer named Masahiro

[00:14:54] Mori deemed the uncanny valley in 1970.

[00:14:58] Most of you have probably heard of the uncanny valley at this point because it's become a

[00:15:03] fairly popular term.

[00:15:06] But his research actually went, when I was looking this up, it was, it surprised me.

[00:15:10] The first English translation of his research wasn't even published until 2012.

[00:15:16] So people knew of the term and it was used.

[00:15:19] But I think my theory is that as technology made things look more and more human, whether

[00:15:25] it was digital animation or robots or whatever, I assume people started using the term more

[00:15:31] and that's what made them ultimately publish it.

[00:15:33] But if you don't know the term uncanny valley, it describes that uncomfortable middle ground

[00:15:39] between lifelike and clearly inanimate objects that are not quite fully human, but not quite

[00:15:45] something else either.

[00:15:47] I think we've probably spent some time on the uncanny valley on this show before because

[00:15:53] it's the same principle about like why Michael Myers mask is so frightening because it's blank

[00:15:58] white and it seems sort of human, but not really.

[00:16:01] And I can't remember exactly where in the show we've talked about this, but we've probably

[00:16:06] discussed it.

[00:16:07] My first encounter with the term uncanny valley, if you're trying to imagine what this is, imagine

[00:16:15] Robert Zemeckis' mid 2000s CG movies.

[00:16:19] Polar Express.

[00:16:20] Like Polar Express.

[00:16:21] Exactly.

[00:16:22] Polar Express is my first, I think, real, we've nailed it.

[00:16:26] We've now have an example.

[00:16:28] Yeah, yeah.

[00:16:28] And that was something where I've to this day never seen it.

[00:16:31] And I was the right age for it.

[00:16:33] I've seen it and I can only imagine that the translation for Polar Express in some foreign

[00:16:38] language must be like train to hell or something.

[00:16:41] Because it is a weird looking movie.

[00:16:46] That and his Beowulf.

[00:16:48] And there was one or two other ones in there that...

[00:16:51] Ali, have you seen any of those Zemeckis?

[00:16:53] I have seen Polar Express and it is unnerving to say the least.

[00:16:58] Yeah.

[00:16:58] The first time I heard the term either was those or possibly 2002, there was a Final Fantasy

[00:17:05] animated movie called The Spirits Within that was supposed to be like the first like photo

[00:17:11] realistic CG animated movie.

[00:17:14] And it wasn't.

[00:17:15] They tried.

[00:17:16] No, no.

[00:17:17] You know.

[00:17:17] There was that and then there was the short, the like animatric short that played before

[00:17:22] I want to say Dreamcatcher of all movies.

[00:17:25] Like if you went to see it in theaters, that was fully CG like fight sequence that looked

[00:17:31] better than the fight sequences in the second Matrix, which is a little disappointing.

[00:17:34] But yeah, that's another like we got it, guys.

[00:17:37] This is passable, right?

[00:17:38] And we're like, no.

[00:17:39] No.

[00:17:39] No.

[00:17:40] Humanity.

[00:17:40] Like you don't need a turning test to find out.

[00:17:42] Like you can just use regular ass eyeballs and be like, this is fucking, there's no way

[00:17:47] that's.

[00:17:48] Yeah.

[00:17:48] I mean, don't get me wrong.

[00:17:49] There will be.

[00:17:50] There's right now people are dating, you know, AI avatars who probably don't look much better

[00:17:54] than that.

[00:17:55] Yeah.

[00:17:56] I mean, I definitely notice it.

[00:17:58] I don't know that even the Zemeckis movies, like some people do have like a real physical

[00:18:04] repulsion.

[00:18:04] Like they cannot watch it.

[00:18:06] I've never like I recognize I'm like, oh, that looks bizarre.

[00:18:09] And if I watch the whole movie, it's like I feel sick, I guess, a little.

[00:18:13] But I'm not like I can't watch it.

[00:18:15] Yeah.

[00:18:15] Yeah.

[00:18:15] I'm the same way.

[00:18:16] It's just it's just extremely off putting.

[00:18:18] Yeah, it's off putting.

[00:18:19] Dead eyes.

[00:18:20] Yeah.

[00:18:20] So crazy.

[00:18:21] So I linked Masahiro Mori's paper, translated paper in the show notes.

[00:18:26] But the reason that it's called the Uncanny Valley is because the paper literally presents

[00:18:31] a graph.

[00:18:32] And on this graph, the horizontal axis measures the humanness of objects such as dolls, cartoons

[00:18:39] and robots on a scale from zero, which is a completely inhuman industrial robot to 100%,

[00:18:47] which he noted as a healthy human being.

[00:18:51] And the vertical axis gauges human affinity for those objects with the top indicating strong

[00:18:59] liking and the bottom or some things actually dip below the bottom indicating dislike or discomfort.

[00:19:07] And what he found was that as the humanness of an object increases to around 70%, our affinity

[00:19:15] for the object rises.

[00:19:17] But then at around 80% humanness, which again, it's kind of a loose, you know, he's defined

[00:19:25] it one way with specific examples.

[00:19:26] It's not a perfect science, but around 80% humanness.

[00:19:31] Sure.

[00:19:32] Our affinity for those objects plummets, but then spikes again around 90 to 100% humanness,

[00:19:40] which forms this very deep valley on the graph.

[00:19:44] Weird.

[00:19:44] Yeah.

[00:19:45] Weird.

[00:19:45] It is weird.

[00:19:46] God.

[00:19:46] I don't, I don't understand why it would go up again.

[00:19:50] I feel like it would plummet forever.

[00:19:52] Well, maybe it's a, yeah, I don't know.

[00:19:54] It's got to be something to do with how healthy it looks.

[00:19:56] Well, it's because it's, it's because the objects are getting more humans.

[00:20:31] Japanese human-like doll that sort of was like the, the deer of the uncanny valley on

[00:20:38] his chart, but you know, like crash test dummies, I bet are in the, in that, uh, that valley

[00:20:45] somewhere in the seventies at least.

[00:20:48] So we know that this valley exists.

[00:20:50] We know that it creates an unsettling feeling in humans when they look at it, but why do

[00:20:55] objects in that valley create this feeling?

[00:20:58] So I did some research and I found according to this review that was presented at the super

[00:21:05] villainy named international conference on human computer interaction, the phenomenon,

[00:21:11] the phenomenon of the uncanny valley can be explained from two perspectives, one of evolutionary

[00:21:18] psychology and one of cognitive conflict.

[00:21:21] So if you branch those off, there's sort of two hypotheses on each branch.

[00:21:26] So on the evolutionary psychology perspective, there's the threat avoidance hypothesis, which

[00:21:32] posits that evolutionary pressures driven by the threats of diseases and death shape our

[00:21:39] unease with humanoid objects.

[00:21:41] So pathogen avoidance suggests imperfections in human-like entities trigger associations with

[00:21:48] diseases because you fear that that human-like entity could potentially transmit an illness.

[00:21:55] And then a term that they call mortality salience links the uncanny feeling to anxiety about death,

[00:22:03] particularly when the humanoid objects resemble deceased individuals.

[00:22:07] Wow.

[00:22:08] Wow.

[00:22:08] I mean, that makes sense.

[00:24:19] And that's an explanation for the uncanny valley is that our deep reptile genes.

[00:24:24] It's a defense mechanism built in our DNA structure to keep away aliens and honestly

[00:24:30] fairies at this point.

[00:25:46] based on traits such as symmetry, facial proportions, and skin quality.

[00:27:43] However, this attribution of human-like feelings is unsettling because it goes beyond our expectations

[00:27:49] for robots.

[00:27:50] While people are comfortable with robots performing human-like tasks, the idea of them having human-like

[00:27:56] feelings creates discomfort, which is the most robotic way to possibly say that.

[00:28:02] But yes, the idea of them having human-like feelings does create discomfort in me because they would

[00:28:08] just be slaves, which wouldn't be good.

[00:28:11] That would be bad.

[00:28:13] And I guess, you know, that hypothesis is specifically robot-oriented, but I think it kind of translates

[00:28:40] expectations for humanoid entities.

[00:28:43] For instance, we expect humanoid robots to move and speak smoothly like humans.

[00:28:47] However, these expectations are often violated with robots moving mechanically and having synthetic

[00:28:53] voices.

[00:28:53] Not for long.

[00:28:57] This mismatch between expectations and reality leads to negative emotions, avoidance behaviors,

[00:29:02] and feelings of eeriness.

[00:32:50] a chicken or the egg question because it's like, did we start making media and telling

[00:32:54] stories about creepy dolls because of the Uncanny Valley?

[00:32:58] Or did the stories draw our attention to the effect and compound it?

[00:33:02] As I was looking for answers to this question, I kept getting pointed to an article from Smithsonian

[00:33:07] Magazine written July 15th, 2015 by Linda Rodriguez McRobbie.

[00:33:12] And it does a really fantastic job of digging into the cultural history of our fear of dolls.

[00:33:17] So I'll be quoting from it fairly extensively to guide our discussion here.

[00:33:22] But according to the article, dolls have been a part of human play for thousands of years.

[00:33:28] In 2004, a 4,000 year old stone doll was unearthed in an archaeological dig on the Mediterranean

[00:33:34] island of Pantellaria.

[00:33:37] And that illustrates the power these stories hold over us because my first thought is put

[00:33:42] it back.

[00:33:43] Like, put the fucking 4,000 year old doll back.

[00:33:46] No good can come of that.

[00:33:48] But the article continues that the British Museum, quote, has several examples of ancient Egyptian

[00:33:54] rag dolls made of papyrus stuffed linen.

[00:33:56] Over millennia, toy dolls cross continents and social strata were made from sticks and rags,

[00:34:02] porcelain and vinyl, and have been found in the hands of children everywhere.

[00:34:05] And by virtue of the fact that dolls are people in miniature, unanimated by their own emotions,

[00:34:11] it's easy for a society to project whatever it wanted onto them.

[00:34:16] Just as much as they could be made out of anything, they could be made into anything.

[00:34:20] So that's the first angle that this article explores.

[00:34:23] Not the aesthetic discomfort inherent in dolls, but the psychological one.

[00:34:28] And I think, Allie, it kind of speaks to what your book is about.

[00:34:31] Like, not that the doll is made out of a person, but that the metaphor is that you're projecting

[00:34:37] these ideas about death onto them, which I think is pretty cool.

[00:34:41] The article continues,

[00:34:42] I think there's quite a tradition of using dolls to reflect cultural values and how we

[00:34:46] see children or who we wish them to be, says Patricia Hogan, curator at the Strong National

[00:34:53] Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, and associate editor of a very fun-sounding publication,

[00:35:00] the American Journal of Play.

[00:35:01] Huh.

[00:35:02] That sounds like Pokey would be the editor, like Gumby or Pokey would be the editor.

[00:35:07] This fact kind of blew my mind.

[00:35:09] She says,

[00:35:10] By the end of the 19th century, many parents no longer saw their children as unfinished adults,

[00:35:15] but rather regarded childhood as a time of innocence that ought to be protected.

[00:35:19] And the reason that blew my mind is because I doubt that either of the three of us or many

[00:35:25] of the people listening to this show experience childhood as unfinished adults.

[00:35:29] Like, it's just baked into the fabric of life that childhood is a time of innocence that ought

[00:35:35] to be protected.

[00:35:36] But that wasn't the case until very recently.

[00:35:39] I mean, Ed, I know your dad was a plumber.

[00:35:46] He didn't, but I wish he had, honestly.

[00:36:37] I mean, I had a lot of freedom as a kid and I definitely felt like my parents thought it

[00:36:44] was important that I had like a joyful childhood.

[00:36:48] I mean, it was me and my sisters, we had a lovely childhood.

[00:36:52] I mean, I feel like a lot of people who, well, I mean, writing sometimes comes from places

[00:36:56] of great pain, but I also think it comes from people who had the ability and the space to

[00:37:01] develop an imagination.

[00:37:03] Exactly.

[00:37:03] You know, like if you didn't, it's very like, you have to have the ability to spend that

[00:37:08] time in your head and in, you know, wherever to have those ideas and tell those stories.

[00:37:14] Anyway, this turn towards childhood innocence is what prompted dolls to become more cherubic

[00:37:19] and angelic looking.

[00:37:20] And to my mind, upped the uncanny valley factor because before they looked like, you know,

[00:37:26] cute little kids or whatever, or that before they looked that real, they were less uncanny.

[00:37:32] The article tells us that dolls also have an instructional function.

[00:37:36] This also I thought was crazy.

[00:37:39] Often reinforcing gender norms.

[00:37:41] Yes.

[00:37:41] And social behavior through the 18th and 19th century, dressing up dolls gave little girls

[00:37:46] the opportunity to learn to sew or knit.

[00:37:49] Hogan says girls also used to act out social interactions with their dolls, not only classic

[00:37:54] tea parties, but also more complicated social rituals such as funerals.

[00:37:59] Oh, amazing.

[00:38:01] Which is amazing and nightmarish in and of itself.

[00:38:05] A bunch of like, can you imagine a bunch of Victorian girls acting out a funeral with

[00:38:10] their dolls?

[00:39:10] So, so dolls without meaning to mean a lot, but one of the more relatively recent ways we

[00:39:17] relate to dolls is as strange objects of, and this is a totally scientific term, creepiness.

[00:39:24] Research into why we think things are creepy and what potential use that might have is somewhat

[00:39:29] limited, but it does exist.

[00:39:31] Creepy in the modern sense of the word has been around since the middle of the 19th century.

[00:39:36] Its first appearance in the New York times was in an 1877 reference to a story about

[00:39:41] a ghost.

[00:39:42] And in 2013, Frank McAndrew, who is a psychologist at Knox college in Illinois and Sarah Kenke,

[01:00:15] These women who referred to their doll collections as, quote, nurseries, were sometimes shunned by

[01:00:22] other antique doll collectors who did not have the same relationship with their own dolls.

[01:00:27] Women, the article says, it is almost exclusively women who collect reborns.

[01:00:32] That admit to collecting reborns.

[01:00:34] This is a huge distinction.

[01:00:36] But the people who collect reborns often treat them as they would real babies.

[01:00:41] Some psychologists have talked about reborns as, quote, transition objects for people dealing

[01:00:52] dolls could come to life, but even so, it's not socially acceptable for adults to entertain

[01:00:56] the same desire.

[01:00:58] But my issue with these reborn dolls isn't that you want them to be real so much as it is

[01:02:33] Hoffman, who wrote The Nutcracker, itself a living doll story.

[01:02:43] And his story, The Sandman, is often pointed to as a case study in The Uncanny.

[01:03:26] The horror in this story turned on the deceptive attractiveness of the girl, rather than

[01:03:33] For the 19th century, the article notes that creepy doll stories tended to be about the

[01:03:38] malevolence of the maker more than the doll itself.

[01:06:25] So it's essentially, it sounds like it is a dramatic horror story interspersed with these musical numbers, but they hadn't quite figured out like the right ratio of like story to musical in like a talkie.

[01:06:40] So it's just sort of this overly long and weird movie about a ventriloquist with anger issues who could only express kindness through his dummy.

[01:15:39] So the family built a shrine to her and they put the doll up on the shrine.

[01:15:45] And they started to notice whenever they would go to the altar and pray for her that the doll's

[01:15:51] hair, which was in a short bob, has grown.

[01:15:55] So the hair started growing and the hair felt real.

[01:15:58] And they were like, it's our daughter.

[01:16:02] So that's how they treated the doll from then on.

[01:18:43] I wanted to cover was also another Japanese one, but it doesn't really cross over with,

[01:18:51] Well, so few Venn diagrams include teeth.

[01:18:56] But so I'd never heard of this kind of creepy doll.

[01:18:59] It's called the Hinagami doll.

[01:19:01] And I'm not entirely sure.

[01:19:03] This is one of those things where there's lots of writing about it on the internet,

[01:19:07] but most of the writing seems to be sourced from one page.

[01:19:11] So I don't know.

[01:19:13] The page is an online guide to Japanese folklore, yokai.com.

[01:19:18] And they have this story about Hinagami dolls that I found super interesting.

[01:19:23] But again, I couldn't really find much else about them on the internet.

[01:19:27] So maybe someone just made this up and posted it.

[01:19:29] But if they made it up, it's a great doll myth.

[01:19:32] So Hinagami are powerful spirits from Toyama Prefecture.

[01:19:36] So they're spirits that reside in dolls and they grant their owners wishes.

[01:19:41] So families who own Hinagami quickly become rich and powerful.

[01:19:46] And people who become rich and famous very quickly are sometimes suspected of owning Hinagami.

[01:19:52] But the dolls come with a catch.

[01:19:54] If a new request is not made as soon as a wish is granted, the Hinagami will demand what is next.

[01:20:02] As soon as that request is fulfilled,

[01:20:04] the Hinagami demands another and another and another.

[01:20:07] And this pattern never ends.

[01:20:08] So they're a creepy doll that kind of speaks to human greed.

[01:20:13] And the article about them on yokai.com says that because their creation comes from human greed and desire,

[01:20:20] Hinagami cling to their creators obsessively and never leave their side.

[01:20:24] Their attachment is so powerful that even death cannot separate it from its master.

[01:20:29] When a Hinagami's creator dies, the Hinagami will follow them to hell and haunt them for all of eternity.

[01:20:35] Oh, wow.

[01:20:36] So, yeah, brutal curse doll, but operates in a very unique way for a curse doll.

[01:20:43] Like the idea that it's essentially like a genie that makes you keep wishing until I guess you probably wish yourself into a corner, basically.

[01:20:52] It's funny.

[01:20:53] I don't know when the Hinagami doll was invented, but I do find very similar to Godzilla being a direct response to nuclear war.

[01:21:03] But it does seem like America and Japan, Japan even more so, do have this like work, work, work, work, work culture that I do wonder of the like, we got email.

[01:21:13] We thought we'd have all this extra time because now it takes one minute to send something versus it used to take 20 minutes.

[01:21:19] I'm having this extra time now.

[01:21:20] But reality was, well, now you got to send shit every fucking minute.

[01:21:23] They burn the midnight oil over there.

[01:21:25] And so I do wonder if it's there is like a potential direct thematic, like we're working ourselves the fucking decks.

[01:21:44] The reason the dolls caught my eye actually is because their creation ritual reminds me a little bit of homunculi.

[01:21:54] In the most common ritual, the person who wishes to create a hinagami must begin collecting grave earth that has been trampled on by people during the day.

[01:22:03] This sounds old.

[01:22:04] This sounds older than 1980s, maybe.

[01:22:05] Grave earth must be collected in this way every night for three years.

[01:22:10] For an even stronger hinagami, they should take earth from seven different graveyards in seven different villages.

[01:22:17] That's upping the risk, man.

[01:22:19] You can't be stealing from so many places.

[01:22:21] And I don't know.

[01:22:22] It's unclear if you then have to also do that.

[01:22:25] If it has to be grave earth that's been trampled on by people during the day and you have to collect it every night for three years from seven different graveyards in seven different villages, it sounds like your whole life would just be collecting dirt to make your hinagami doll.

[01:22:41] It would take a very long time.

[01:22:42] You got to do at least three years.

[01:22:43] You got to let everyone in your Rolodex know, like, I'm busy for three years.

[01:22:50] And if this was the States, like, not even Arlington Cemetery has people who give that much a fuck to show up every day.

[01:22:56] Yeah, maybe if this is an older ritual, maybe people spent more time in graveyards in the past visiting than they do now.

[01:23:05] But once collected, however you collect it and wherever you store it, because if you're storing seven different graveyards worth of dirt for three years, you're going to have to explain to your significant other why your garage is filled with dirt.

[01:23:18] But once you have all this, the grave earth is mixed with human blood until it becomes clay-like.

[01:23:24] Then it is molded into a doll shape representing a god or a spirit that its creator worships.

[01:23:30] This doll is placed and left in a busy road until it has been trampled upon by 1,000 people.

[01:23:37] Oh my God!

[01:23:38] Who's getting that count?

[01:23:39] Oh, you got to take it to Times Square!

[01:23:42] Yeah, you can get it done in one afternoon in Times Square.

[01:23:45] But if you're in a little Japanese village, that could also take years.

[01:23:48] How busy is the road?

[01:23:50] But then you retrieve the doll, and at that point, it is a hinagami.

[01:23:53] There is an alternative method, which is to collect graveyard stones and carve them into 1,000 small dolls, each about 9 centimeters long.

[01:24:03] These dolls are boiled in a large pot until only one of them rises to the surface.

[01:24:09] 9,000 in one fucking pot?

[01:24:12] 1,000 each 9 centimeters long.

[01:24:15] Oh, okay.

[01:24:16] So that still seems...
